Concrete Driveway Maintenance in Omaha

Concrete Driveway Maintenance in Omaha

Though we’re deep into winter, it’s a great time to discuss concrete driveway maintenance in Omaha.  Winter is the worst time of the year for your concrete, be it a driveway, patio, sidewalk or steps.  With little effort, there are two main things you can do to help your concrete persevere through an Omaha winter.

One of the biggest issues that we find when we’re called out to look at problem concrete is deicing chemicals.  Many folks avoid salt because of lawn damage and its propensity to rust metal.  Unfortunately, salt isn’t even the worst product that you can use.  The most popular chemicals used in deicing are ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate.  Both of these chemicals attack the concrete at a chemical level, destroying it faster than would have occurred otherwise.  That’s not to say that salt is the answer, as it still ultimately will destroy your concrete, just not as quickly.  The best answer for many is to simply use sand for traction as it won’t cause concrete damage.

Another big issue that we find is one that is taken for granted by many, including the manufacturers of the tools.  What is the problem, you ask?  It’s metal and metal bladed snow shovels.  Unfortunately, as strong as concrete looks (and it is strong), repeated striking with a metal edge can definitely damage it.  There are snow shovels with synthetic blades that are quite strong and won’t cause the damage that a metal edge will.  Ultimately, a snowblower whose blades aren’t scraping the concrete is likely the best answer.

Those are a few tips that can help you keep your concrete in top shape throughout the winter.  In the Spring we’ll address some additional things you can do (or have done) that will help extend the life of your concrete for years to come.  If you have any questions regarding concrete maintenance, please contact us via our website or call us at 402-619-6116
